Treatment of Pharmaceutical Wastewater via Advanced Column Flotation Technology: A Feasible Choice from Laboratory Experiment to Industrial Process

IPODI (The International Postdoc Initiative) of Technische Universität Berlin is a part of “Wissenschaftlerinnen an die Spitze” that aims at increasing the number of women in leadership positions. Since 2013, IPODI is co-funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND Program of the European commission.

Project: Since, the scarcity of clean and healthy water sources and increasing pollutions of urbanization and industrialization is a serious global concern in the last few decades, this issue needs to cooperate all societies to supply the lack of drinking water and protect the environment. The aim of the current IPODI project is treatment of wastewater (with confusing on pharmaceutical pollutants) via advanced column flotation technology using biosurfactants to achieve a sustainable method from laboratory scale to industrial process.

Our proposed research has been divided into 4 overall work packages:

WP1: we investigate a wide range of surfactants and novel bio-surfactants in point view of surface dynamic behavior, foam formation and stability, and surface properties to implement a novel biodegradable flotation system

WP2: To improve the process performance and achieve to the best efficiency, we will use the various bio-surfactants, modifiers and the mixed surface-active reagents

WP3: Since the foam column flotation is a complex process controlled by physicochemical and hydrodynamic phenomena, operating parameters effect on the flotation performance. In this step, we study the effect of the electrochemical properties, froth properties, and operating conditions to find the optimum conditions

WP4: During all steps, the quality and electrochemical properties of the treated water will be evaluated by the proper characterization methods for organic and inorganic contaminants
