CO2nsistent - Techno-Economic and Life Cycle Assessment Guidelines for CO2 Utilization


CO2 capture and utilization has been gaining momentum as academia, industry and governments seek solutions to reduce emissions and create new circular business opportunities. But benefits cannot be taken for granted and questions about economic viability, environmental impacts and trade-offs between economics and environment have to be carefully analysed. To enable informed decision making, systematic assessment is required, involving a combination of techno-economic assessment (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA). Currently, no standardized TEA and LCA methods have been adopted, so studies cannot easily be compared, risking sub-optimal decisions. Furthermore, interest in the development and adoption of such guidelines has been voiced by the European Commission (e.g. EC SAM HLG) amongst others. Consequently, as a result of the previous project funded by the Global CO2 Initiative and EIT Climate-KIC initial, first-of-a-kind TEA and LCA guidelines for CO2 utilization were launched in August 2018. These guidelines did not only receive broad attention from stakeholders but are already put into practice for example by Carbon XPRIZE.

Building upon the previous project, University of Sheffield, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin and IASS Potsdam will deepen and broaden the current guidelines in a three-year project. In year 1, the project team will enrich the current guidelines with additional aspects raised by stakeholders, especially on policy, study commissioning and alignment with international initiatives. In year 2, guidance for assessment of technologies in early development stages and methods to combine TEA and LCA to identify trade-offs between environmental and economic indicators will be developed. In year 3, a formalized guideline for the combined assessment and assessment of early-stage technologies will be published open access along a series of example studies. Stakeholders and practitioners will be involved throughout the project in a range of workshops and webinars.
