Polymer Science Lab Course

General Information

Groups (& dates) for the lab experiments will be assigned during the safety briefing on ....at ....(foyer TC-building).

Here you will find general information about the lab course in polymer science.

The lab course includes four experiments:

VIS...Viscometry

CAL...Investigation of emulsion polymerization in a calorimeter

RTD...Residence time distribution in a tubular- and tank reactor

DSC...Investigation of initiator decomposition via Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Further Information & Oral Exam

After all experiments have been done, an oral exam about the lab course takes place. The grade is influenced by this exam, the lab work and the reports.

o Things to be done before experiment starts:

  • Reading and understanding the experimental manual
  • Knowing the experimental setup and the experimental steps
  • Think about questions concerning the experiment
  • A talk with the assistant about the experiment and the theoretical background (15-30 min.)

o Observations should be noted, at least one USB stick per group should be exist to save experimental data of DSC, RTD and CAL

o Each group have to write one report for each experiment and have to send it by email or bring it to the assistant within one week! If a correction is necessary, it has to be done within another week. Each report will be graded and influences your experimental grade.

o A report contains of an introduction, a theoretical background, a description of experimental setup and procedure, results, a discussion and a summary.

o Copying from others, taking parts one by one of literary sources, absence in lab leads to failing the course!

o After all experiments have been done, an oral exam about the lab course takes place. The grade is influenced by this exam, the lab work and the reports!

You have an oral exam about the practical course. It is a group examination. The oral exam takes place at the TC building in the social room TC 116.
